My question is I have a 140 hp v4.Should this motor have the year of the motor in the serial number?

The title says the motor is a 1985.This I think is a cross flow motor but the manual says that the cross flow motors have the thermostats in the exhaust housing.If the thermostat is in the their would I still have a temp sensor wire running into the cylinder head?

I just want to make sure that I'm not mistaken in the year and make of my motor.The model number is J140TLCO.Also If anyone could tell me what the letters mean in the model # that would be great.

I ask about the serial # because their is an 86 in it is this just coincedence?

Thanks for all your help

1985 140 is a looper.
Look your motor up on the wiseco.com site.

J= Johnson
140= HP
T= Trim and Tilt
L= 20" shaft
CO= 85, C=8 and O=5

The 86 in your serial number is coincidence.

The wire going into the cylinder head is for the overheat sensor.

Will this kit work for my motor.What is confusing me is that in my manual the exploded view for the crossflow looks like the parts pictured in this kit.

The way I read the manual is that the thermostat is mounted in the head.The gaskets in the kit would not work.Am I missing something?

What years did they make the crossflows vs. the loop charged motors?

Thanks for the help?

Omc made 140 crossflow from 1977-1984 the in 1985-87 it went to a small bore looper. When customers call me and ask how to tell between the two I tell them: If it has a hose off bottom of heads similar to a letter "S" and size of middle finger ,its a crossflow. No hose its a looper.

So the kit in the link above says that it will fit 78-85.Then it should not matter if it is a cross flow or a looper?The manual gives different instructions for maintenance between the two.

Or does the same parts go in different places?

Sorry for asking so many questions but the manual is very vauge on this subject.

Go to shop.evinrude.com, look up your motor, and according to the diagrams, your thermostats are in the top of the heads, one on each side.

The kit you are picturing is for the thermos that are mounted down low on the back of the engine at or near the powerhead to adapter plate joint.

I believe the Sierra kit you have pictured is the wrong part.

Will do.These motors are great.I bought the motor used and put it on a 1972 starcraft holiday 18 foot boat and it really sings.I just need to get some of the bugs worked out.I will be doing your fuel pump conversion,changing t-stats and rebuilding the carbs this off season.I should be good for the spring walleye jig bite on lake erie.

Thanks again for all the help
