I am working with a friend on his 85 hp Johnson I think its a seventys model.
I know about disconecting the shift rod, But does it make and differance what gear the shifter is in?. Forward ,reverse or neutral. when takeing off or reinstalling lower end.

I believe that you should have the shifter in reverse or you won't be able to access the connector on the shift rod.
