Ok, random thought...does anyone still watch the old episodes of Junkyard Wars on The Science Channel? I record all of them, and it seems that nearly every episode, neither of the competing teams is able to pull off the objective, yet they supposedly still can win. I mean, I was on a FIRST Robotics team in high school, and trust me, there were no prizes given for simply being able to move the robot to the location of the objective if you couldn't complete it.
I always wondered how the people managed to get on the show, and also where the show pulls their experts from, seeing as half the time, the experts appear to have less idea what they're doing than the people actually building the project.
Does anyone else here agree that they would be able to excel at building stuff, to do stuff, out of junk? I guess what made me think about this is that the last episode I watched, the objective was to build a hydrofoil boat. Supposedly, the experts knew the principles and construction of commercial hydrofoils, but through watching the episode, it was pretty apparent that they had no real expertise in the field. I mean, just the designs alone of the hydrofoil ITSELF, not even including the hull design, was absolutely ludicrous.
They even made the hydrofoil wings out of wood. WOOD! When they are SURROUNDED by massive amounts of sheet metal, rods, etc. Personally, I would have simply taken some sheet metal, wrapped a length of it around a piece of tubing, rolled the metal to shape it, and then welded the edges. Instead, they spent somewhere in the realm of an hour or two, CARVING the wood into an airfoil shape. Where is the ingenuity? I thought that it was a privilege to be on Junkyard Wars.
Psh, I say we should make our own watercraft-themed version of Junkyard Wars...call it Salvage Yard Sloops or something...
