Gelled trim fluid and pump cleanup

So what causes tilt-trim fluid to gel, water, contamination with another fluid, age?

I emptied the reservoir from a used Oildyne pump (8 years old) and the fluid came out gelled up and clumpy, kind of looked like bad paint. I removed and cleaned out the reservoir, pump housing, gears, checkballs and screen that had a waxy film all over the place, took a bit of effort to remove the film. I didn't remove the 3 hex shaped aluminum extensions that drop down from the pump housing as I didn't know if they were calibrated for pump pressure, should have I removed them and cleaned them out too?

I have no idea of the pumps prior history, but want to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Thanks, Dan

Ayuh,... Never heard of such a thing,...
Clean it out,+ purge it out with fresh fluid.... It'll probably take a couple of changes...

Yeah, I thought it was pretty strange, 1/2 the fluid looked normal and the other half poured out like jello, and that stuff was stuck to everything inside the pump.

Think I'll fill it with ATF on the bench and cycle it forward/reverse for a minute 10 - 20 times. The rest of the tilt system is clean, just the pump contaminated.

I have never seen this either, but I would guess it was topped off with something that was not compatible with what was in it.
