Hi there.

New member and new boater. So i just got this 1988 Glasstream 152 Tempest Bowrider Eng.Mercruiser 4cyl. 2.5L 120HP Outdrive - inboard / outboard Mercruiser Alpha One. I was with the seller who was really helpful to me and then just before he left he said he will watch me drive then leave. Well i am so STUPID to not have read my books before taking the boater exam and guess what...i didn't realize there is a green buyon there waiting and i went on the other side and hit rocks and sand!
Anyhow the motor wont start but then eventually now it starts fine with just one flick of the ignition BUT it wont go into gear forward or backwards. I try to put it into gear but it just pushes gas and the boat stays there.
There was ALOT of sand that got inside the prop and when i turned the boat on, all i see is sand gushing out. Anyhow so just needed some advice as to what it would take to get going or what the problem really is.
I have sent it out to a mechanic and hope to get that fixed but i am just posting here to get some ideas and to learn more as i have no clue and am new to this game.
Also i am looking and really cant find the manual of the motor if anyone can help me out. I am sure its on the net but i cant seem to find the right one for this one.

Id say at the very least you need the cooling system flushed and a new impeller.
At the most a new lower unit.
Or it could be anything in between.

What do you think would a new/used lower unit, that is the outboard unit cost in Canada, Toronto.
I spoke with my mechanic and he took a look at it and he says the drive shaft is broken , bellows need to be replaced, and also the gimble
i was told it may take 10-12 hrs of work..this is soo dissapointing as i had a surprise for my GF on saturday when she comes back but now ...well...?!?!
any idea's guys?

thanks a million

I would buy the SEI drive from iboats, have the gimbal bearing and bellows changed. may as well do the shift cable while its apart and go boating.
look at the warrenty with SEI and the cost of parts to replace your broken stuff and you will see why i dont rebuild merc alpha stuff anymore.

EXPENSIVE is the key word i am sure without looking.
So do you think its better the just get another outdrive which i am getting so far for $500. Only problem i am thinking is that well if i get a outdrive that is used, i am only getting that person's problems so its in a way better to get new parts and u know that its new and u can trust ur boat then. but on the other hand, pockets speak louder because i clearly dont have the money to spend on new parts and labor worth 10hrs.
any suggestions..
i will post in detail what is wrong once i go check out the boat which is opened by the mechanic now

Ayuh,... The Whole Idea of this forum is to take that 10hr. Labor bill,+ spend it on Parts, or gas.... DIY....
For alittle over twice the price of that Used drive, you can have a Brand New drive, with a 3yr. Warranty....

Doing it Yourself,.... It's a Free Drive.....

I agree with Bond-O, do it yourself. With the help from him and DonS, you'll have no problems. Maybe have your mechanic change the gimbal bearing and align it, but the rest is easy as pie. As for the manual, look in the "Adults Only " section, it'll be there.

Re: new owener & hit earth with prop

ok dealing with gimbal is a tough job! putting the outdrive is cake for the most part but i dont even have the right tools to start with.
i have looked online for new outdrives and thats costing over $1600 minumum!
there is no way i can afford that especially after the 5000 i spent on the damn boat buying it.
so i have a person who can hook me up with parts so all i need is my mechanic to quote the price for his parts then see and compare whats cheaper for me to deal with.
its freaking unbelieveable that just the lower end drive shaft is worth over $300!!!

edit: i cant even be able to find the right outdrive..here is mine and u can see at the top of that outdrive its flat and has no elevation with a hole for it as if a hook can go in there..here is a pic and its circled in red. this is my outdrive and most i have seen so far that are being sold used over the internet all have a little hook. my mechanic said it wont even bolt on and i should stay away.

Here's an idea. Call your insurance company. Most policies include collision. I've seen on many threads here, boaters have been covered when they hit rocks and damage their engine/drive.

You do have insurance on your boat - correct?

here are few things to consider if you do have insurance.
An issue like this will be covered however most policies will pay you based on the depreciated value of the drive. If the boat is old that could be as much as 80% of the value (i.e. if a new replacement Merc outdrive is $3000 they will give you about $600 toward it). Assuming you have at least a $500 deductable that means you get $100 if you have $1000 deductable you get nothing! The insurance will however usually pay all of the labor costs. THis is where the DIY part does not pay off. You should contact your insuance agent to ask about filing a claim. Then get a repair shop to give you a quote on the replacement with all labor to remove and reinstall the drive (that might be as much as $1000). You can also try to argue with the insrance adjuster about the depreciation (if its alot) and try to get them to pay you based on the cost of a used outdive comperable to what you had (that should be aleast $1000 if you could find one). Once the insurance settles up with you you can do whatever you want with the money. I would advise using it to buy a new SEI drive and then consider installing it yourself (maybe have the shop do the gimble if you are not able to that yourself). The SEI drives are not Mrec OEM's but they do come with a 3 year no fault warranty (that means that even if you hit something again by accident they will repair or replace it at no cost). I was shocked when I heard that warranty applies (I guess they really want to sell drives!). Any way, the boat is uesless without a replacement drive on it so you probably have no choice but to suck it up and pay what it costs to replace it. Isn't boating FUN !!!! good luck

Nope sir...just bought it and i wasn't even 5 mins in riding it and this happned.
i am not planning on insurance as even when i tried to get a quote for a car, i was told $500 per month and the car was worth maybe $2000 only.
so i cant even imagine if i get a quote for this boat. all i have is registered the boat and have a licence.

Decent advice..so after running around i found a mechanic that will do the entire job with labor for $1500. this means i get a rebuilt lower end out drive that he has already and he will put the gimble stuff.
sounds resonance i think and i will try and see if he gives me a 1yr warranty on this. work will begin in one day as i have to deliver the boat to him.
where do i look to get insurance here in canada? i have no clue!

boat insurance is cheap, at least in the u.s.

i would rather have a new se drive than spend that kind of money to rebuild. if i did it myself and paid just parts, that'd be different.
