I have a 89' 100 Johnson with a good foot and a 96' 150 Rude with a bad reverse. I was wondering if thetre was any difference in a V-4 foot and a V-6 foot.
Thanks Sparkie
Mostly, yes. The V6's typically have used a HD gearcase and the V4's a smaller gearcase, but a few V4's ('85 120/140 for example) have used the big gearcase.
Hate to disagree but no, it will not fit as1) 1989 is a 3 5/8 dia gearcase (2) its a crossflow and driveshaft is different between a looper and crossflow(3)the early 120/140 and later V-4 "bigfoot" units will bolt up but gear ratios is different. So for a direct bolt up replacement the answer is no.
thanks Faz...now this is my first gear case rebuild..how do I get the shaft and hub out..I got all the bolts out..I think..Shaft will move up about 1" then stops.
Thanks Sparkie
On a 96 model just remove the 2 bolts and tabs that hold carrier in place and pull out. Measure the prop shaft as there are 2 different size reverse gears, tilt case and reverse will slip out.
Also I read somewhere that the shift rod height for a looper is different than a regular. I have a 1996 150 Intuder that says loop charged on the breather and spitfire series on the cowl. I have been unable to find a model # anywhere on the motor. So are the looper foots different then the regular ones??
The shift rod heights I read are 21 1/4 for regular V-6 and 21 15/16 on a looper. Also I will need to know how to know what parts to order for my foot.
So any advice on how to ID my engine/foot would be helpful.
Sparkie
ok I have done some checking ..it appears that because I have the 4 bolts as opposed to the 2 bolts and tabs..that I may have a V-4 foot on my motor..in which case I will not bother to fix it..but find a V-6 replacement.
Thanks Sparkie
15 splines on the prop shaft and 20 on the driveshaft. I am not sure about the year of my motor..previous owner said the guy he got it from said it was a 1996 150..all I know for sure is it is a V-6
That a early style lower from used from 1979-1991, for it to have a looper shaft(1996) it will be in the 88-91 years as these had the 2 piece drive shafts. If it says Sitfire,Intruder its a 60 degree looper.
Faz ..can you tell me what LUs will work with my motor..I am guessing from your post that a 88'-91' V-6...I know where a 2001 150 fitch is with a rod through the block I can get cheap..would that LU work??
Thanks Sparkie
