motor wont run at high rpm

i have an old 9 1/2 hp johnson. i got it to start up on the first pull most every time. it idles good, but when i try to run it at high rpm, it bogs and stalls. if i mess the choke on and off, i can keep it running.

Welcome to iboats.
You need to check fuel delivery and give the carb a rebuild.
Basic health check on the motor would be a good idea also if you do not know it's status.
Compression
Spark
Fuel delivery
Plug condition

thanks for the info. the carb kit didn't hurt, but upon tearing the carb apart again, i found that some gunk had plugged the main jet again. cleaned that out, runs great. without the advice, i may have given up and not found that simple fix. i appreciate it.
