First I want to say hi to everyone I think this is my first post, been lurking for awhile, now i need a question answered. I'm going to look at a 1976 johnson 15hp. I had an 8hp 1985 that had a pee hole under the right rear of the motor, will the 76 have this? Anything else to look at? Thanks in advance to any answers.

Compression and test run would concern me ,
check lower gear oil, overall condition under the hood, is paint blistered etc.
no pee indicator wouldn't bother me,
I find a temp guage better anyway.

I agree with kenmyfam. I don't think the 76 had one either.
Other things to check? Yes. Compression, gear case for water, condition of prop & skeg, while turning prop by hand will it shift into forward and reverse, overall cleanliness, ask to see it run in a barrel or if possible in the lake. If it's a good one you will love it. Best of luck. Rick.
P.S. Here is a good site for the 9.9 and 15 owners. Lots of good information.

it has one, the exhaust relief ports, on the back of the leg, at idle, it should have mist or droplets.

Mist and droplets were visable here as motor was running, motor is dirty outside and under hood. Can I use engine cleaner as one would use on a car engine to clean up under hood, or is there something else. Boat and motor has sat since registration expired in 2005. Motor took a few pulls before firing, and ran well at idle, and also in gear both forward and reverse. No excessive heat anywhere to the touch. I think I got a good one. Thanks for the help. motor is a 76, boat is a 75 14' mirrorcraft. came with a travel cover, foot operated minn kota trolling motor, fish finder, danforth anchor with 50 of line, new battery.also a portable radio antenna.

Sounds like your ready to go fishing. Do replace the impeller if your not certain when it was last done. As far as cleaner goes,I use paint thinner and rags and it does a good job although it takes a fair bit of time. For the outside if it has tree bud stains, methyl hydrate takes them off and then a good cleaning and a coat of wax. Hope you enjoy your new rig. Rick.
