Unwanted throttle speed reduction

I just bought a used 1995 pontoon boat with a 1995 50Hp (Model E50TLEO) Evinrude outboard.There is a remote control package mounted on the pedestal. sometimes while moving at anything above 10 MPH, for no apparent reason, the engine speed just drops to less than 5 MPH and 3200 RPM. There is no backfire or uneven running, just the reduced throttle settings. Sometimes after running in that reduced mode for a short while, the throttle settings will go back to normal all by it self and the engine speed and rpm will return to where they were before the slowdown.
If is does not, I have found that by returning the throttle to neutral and then entering the "fast idle" position for a second or two and then returning to neutral and then forward, I can travel normal again for awhile before it happens again. Any Ideas will be appreciated

The engine could be overheating, putting you in "SLOW" mode. It also could be ignition dropping out on one cylinder.

Check for overheating with a temp gun. If thats fine, check for spark on all cylinders when it has power loss.

this could be one or a combination of several things. 1st is the vent open on the fuel tank, motor cannot get fuel out of a vacuum. could be a running warm. could be a coil heating up and failing. could be weak fuel pump.

time to do some trouble shooting.
