greasing fittingsand greases

i know that some grease's are not compatible so with a used motor that i do not know any history how do i know the proper grease to use ? any marine grade grease ok ? these are for the grease fittings on my merc what i just bought was some "sta-lube " marine grease in a tube for a grease gun . i can see two color of greases on my engine now white lithium ? some dark grease who knows what it is. so there a good chance that the grease i just bought will be compatible ? the sta-lube is a light blue do i just keep pumping till the old grease keeps coming out till it turns blue ?

IMHO, keep pumping till the old grease is purged out. I have learned to stay clear of the green greases (wax based). Twice I have had steering rod gum up in the pivot tube. Twice I used PB Blaster to uncease it, then clean out the tube and switch to lithium.

I have also dug wax out of wheel hubs after the grease degraded.

I may be tattling on my self needing to maintain these items more often, but I sold on lithium (no wax separation anymore). BTW, make it lithium for marine environment and wheel bearings.

thanks for that tip. i kind of like the mercury 2-4-C grease but it sure is not cheap. it has teflon in it.
