Johnson outboard buried in sand

Without going into much detail, let me just say I screwed up and allowed my old (1980?) 4-horse Johnson Seahorse to lay on the beach and get flooded with fine sand during a recent storm on Lake Superior. After cleaning out the gas line and carburetor I tried starting it. It ran about ten seconds and quit. What do I need to do to get it up and running? I love this little motor.

You are probably going to remove flywheel and check and clean ign system, and go through carb, clean and blow out with compressd air.

Re: Johnson outboard buried in sand

Getting sand into the engine is a quick and easy way to give the cylinders a bore job. Unfortunately, this method is not quite as precise as the work done in a local machine shop. If you get sand into the engine, it would be recemended to run extra oil into the mix, to prevent stalling. If you want the bore job done in a quicker time, run the engine at higher RPM's to obtain the proper bore diameter.:D

ugh. if it's inside you're in deep doo doo...

I might be tempted to remove the entire powerhead and soak it in something to try and get it all out of the inside. I used kerosene recently to unstick a stuck piston... it worked...

Sorry for your loss. They are great little motors but sand is a viper to the insides. Unless you want to tear it completely apart I would think there is no way to get sand out. Best of luck. Rick.

Pressurewash the inside of the cover and the outside of the engine VERY WELL to remove all sand that couldpossibly get sucked into the motor. i'll let someone else explain the internals, i dont want to possibly lead you down the wrong path

I'd look at the info Tash posted. You may have got lucky by at least cleaning the carbs and sand may not have gotten by the reeds when you tried to start it. But there will still be water in there. Was the motor actually submerged or did waves and sand just splash over the motor all night?

Shawn, you just hijacked someone else's post. You need to go to the proper forum (trolling motors) and click on create new post in the top left corner to start your own.

The second thing. Lake Superior splashed over it all night, and left it half buried in fine sand. I just cleaned the carbs and fuel lines again and couldn't get a pop. And the motor was real tight when I started pulling. Almost frozen. Suppose it's starting to rust inside. I'm fairly handy. Should I tear it all down?

Absolutely!! Do not attempt further turning or starting. The sand will grind the daylights out of the pistons and bearings. You can bet your bottom that it is in there. If nothing else, up through the exhaust.
