Just got this motor and was thinking that as all the part numbers for carb, block and pistons are the same for the 5hp and 6hp version what is the difference? How do i increase power to 6hp?Is it carb related or different gear ratio in lower unit?

could be carbs, but probably a different tune in the exhaust.

Read the number again! The date letters for 1997 are EU!

5DREU and 5DRLEU are the numbers for 1997 standard and long shaft 2 stroke models respectively

5FREU and 5FRLEU are the numbers for the corresponding 4 strokes

and

5FRBEU / 5FRBLEU I'm not sure about (4 strokes made in Belgium perhaps).

Assuming your have a two stroke I think there are just minor internal differences in the carbs between the 5 hp and 6 hp versions. Up rating should be simply a question of identifying the differences from the parts lists and swapping out the 5hp bits for the 6 hp bits. But it is hardly worth the bother.
There may be more I've missed.

You wont, I dont think, uprate it to an 8 hp because the carbs and the crank cases are different!

Gosh i am sorry for my miss typing!!!!!Yes it is 5DRLEUC but it is after midnight here in Scotland!!So tired eyes can be forgiven eh?Same part numbers given for ALL carb parts on 5 and 6hp part lists.Maybe just a marketing thing by manufacturer.

No chance! Scotland is in the same time zone as SE England isn't it?

The complete carb part numbers are different for the DR models compared to the R models and looking at the parts it appears that its a difference in high speed orifice and nozzle well.

I reckon that's it basically a smaller jet size on the derated models

I cannot see anything else

I dont know where you go for parts but users of the YBW forums have found www.WillsMarine.co.uk in Devon good for mail order spares. Www.outboards-direct.co.uk (aka Oakley Marine) in Brighton have also come up trumps.

Ah I have spotted another difference.

Different inlet manifolds !

I'm sure it mst be wrong but the listed price for the 6hp manifold is $389

Now here's an interesting developement.Just had a look at intake manifold on motor and quite clearly is the part no434020 with the magic word 6HP cast into it.Maybe busy fingers have been there before or it left the factory with whatever manifolds were available to the assembly line at the time of building.

Re: Evinrude 5DRLFUC 5hp 1997 upgrade to 6hp

That's the part number for 5 and 6DR models
The manifold for 6hp (and 8hp) models is 433897.

The carb nos are 436881 for 5Dr and 6DR models

but 436879 for 6R models.

I wonder if there is small difference in the carb choke tube diameter. You'd have though they would have just put a restictor plate in to derate them.
