Looking at trading 83 galaxie ANCHOR + $1200 cash for a the Bayliner above. Come with a 350chevy and omc outdrive. My concern is will the outdrive hold up to the 350 motor??? They are giving me $300 on trade.

What? galaxie plus 1200 but getting 300 the other way?

Make some sense.

You are giving up a Galaxie, a quality boat for a Bayliner? With a stringer mount?

You could do a lot to the Galaxie for $1200.

Plus $1200 or is it $900 with the $300 they are going to give you?

Go check with a boat shop and ask them some questions.

My galaxie is toasted compression is 150,40,40,150 on 3.0 Mercruiser. They are giving me 300.00 for the galaxie towards the purchase of the Bayliner for a total cost of 1500.00 w/ a 30 day warranty. The cost of the fix on the galaxie is far worse than I paid (450.00)

Hope that makes more sense.

I think that you could find a block, have it redone and dropped in the boat for that $1200. The fact that you paid $450 for the boat only ADDS to the argument for fixing it.

Dealers never do anything to help the buyer. If they are allowing you $300 for thew boat you have to ask yourself why.

Bottom line, if they scrap the boat they still have to get rid of the hull. So, they have to know that they are going to make a lot on the parts they strip to offset the labor and disposal involved.

I would say offer them 1200 cash money for the Bayliner (and that is still more than it is worth) and keep the galaxy and make it a project boat, or strip it and sell the parts youself.
I have done a few and just take the hull to the landfill, push it off the trailer, then go home and list the trailer for sale as well.
That Mercruiser drive is enough to make me strip it and part it out. On the other hand, compared to that OMC drive, that could be enough to convince me to fix the Galaxy:rolleyes:

What you paid for the boat originally is not relevant. If you paid $0 or $50K, you still have the same decision to make.

Personally, I would stay away from a Bayliner although 1985 is actually better than the years 86 through 89. You still are dealing with an old boat with all the problems that come with old boats like rotten transoms, decks and stringers.

It's late August, I say slap a new head gasket on the Galaxy and see what happens. It might be worth gambling a few bucks and an afternoon's work.:D

Well, just don't drop anything heavy in the bayliner or hit anything on the water.
Your hull is 1/4 thick at best and that is the bottom of it, the sides are much thinner.

Yeah, jeez why would you tell me this? I am so new to boating that the only thing that will be in my boat for awhile is the passengers and if they are heavy enough to fall and damage the boat im in trouble,as far as hitting anything with it I keep my head on aswivel at all times while im out (prior Navy)

Sounds like a probable head gasket failure to me. As been said, the dealer/repair place wants to sell you another boat, AND they take your boat and repair it cheap and sell it also at a massive profit. Fix your boat.
As a side note, the transom of my 83 1950 is about 1 inch thick - having recently remounted the swim ladder and other parts.

I actually did not use a dealer for the purchase of the Bayliner,it was a guy who I had bought some boat parts off of who had the boat. He needed the outdrive off of mine to finish a project.

The 1985 Bayliner was made with Volvo equipment. If you are trading make sure you know what your getting. If it's a volvo the drive will handle way more than a 350 can put out.The parts are expensive but they are best there is.
