Shift cable spring screw

I am at an inpass..
Changing both throttle and shift cables...
I do not see this covered in any of the 975 pages of Merc manual #1.
On the stern end, the old cable has this spring loaded pin/screw with the pin through the other end.
I assume that this spring allows for movement during shifting fwd/rvse?
Do the pins come out like a cotter pin? I am having a HECK of a time if it in fact it does come out!

I am very tempted to monkey rig a nut and bolt with a spring..
Any direction is as always appreciated..

Just take a small socket and put it over the pin. Put it in a vice or take a C-clamp, put it over the pin and socket. Press the pin as far out as you can. Now find a punch of some sort that'll fit and drive the pin the rest of the way out. Go to the hardware store to get a new roll pin for putting it back together.

Just buy a new slide. The spring is only there to allow you to push in and turn 90 deg. to release. No other reason. Is this an I/O? Never seen this before. Must be real old or jury rigged.

This is how OMC outboards connect to the control cables.

No if you bolt it you DO NOT need the spring.

How did you get it off? It should go back on the same way.
Or is this a new cable? If so it is probably the wrong one and for an outboard.
