Can you give us the model number so we can tell what motor you have. By what you said I think the shift linkage is holding you up.

Im Sorry For The Lack Of Information. It Is A Evinrude 85 Hp On A 1976 Sea Sprite Deck Boat. The Motor Model Number Is 85693g. I Have Not Removed Any Linkage. I Am Unsure Exactly Where To Go.

OK you have a bell crank linkage under the carb. remove bottom carb. there is a double bar that is crosswise the block. loosen the center bolt, this allows the bars to spread open. the shift rod is on the right (looking from the front). it will release when the bars spread. reverse for install. do not turn the shift rod!!!

If it's not to late, push lower unit back up and secure with one bolt first. Then take shift linkage loose first and now the last bolt out and you'll be able to ease it down slowly.Make sure the woodruff key is in place and try turning the shaft and impeller before reassembly.

Luck ya'll
