Re: Visiting the machine shop tomorrow

Been a few years back....don't recall, believe it was OEM for the original head gasket after the rebuild....came in a gasket set....but I did not retorque the head bolts after bringing it up to temp. Used OEM this time, and reqtorqued.

Didn't use the oil pump tool.

Replace the pump. My pressure would run 8-10 at idle, and 40 when warm at higher RPM. New pump pressure does't drop below 15 and runs 60 at higher RPMs after warming up.

Good Luck....

Yes, and I acknowledge the fact that I'm a completely moron/crap for brains/douchebag for not spending the extra $4000 on the 4.3L conversion/rebuild.
1. The 470 is NOT 1/2 of a 460. If it was you'd need to run EVEN FASTER away from that thing!!

2. You don't have to spend $4000 for another engine drive etc.

I have a boat that originally had a 460 King Cobra inside that only needed an engine rebuild.

After much "deliberation" ...........I decided to replace everything with a 454/Bravo III that I found on Craigslist for $5000.

After I added about $1000 on other additions it came to about $6000.

THEN I started selling the OMC King Kobra "stuff" piece by piece on Craigslist, ebay, etc... here and there a little at a time.

I'm just about done selling stuff.....(all I have left is 2 17p&20p SS props, the power steering stuff, and the rebuilt Holley carb)

So far, I have recovered a few pennies over $3000 for all the OMC "stuff " I sold.

So lessee.....I'm at about $3000 (MORE) into a 1987 Four Winns Liberator I paid $5000 for, and it has a 1997 Mercruiser 7.4L carbed engine and Bravo III installed with (now) about 135hrs (since new) on it. I'm not counting my labor....(according to my wife it ain't worth nuthin anyway;))

I live in the Seattle area of Western Wa. There's a LOT of boats and boat parts in craigslist, The Boat trader, Little Nickle, etc etc.....

I have watched craigslist a little since I did my swap and found similar deals in smaller engine/drive combo's etc.........

You could buy a brand new SEI drive, and a "wrecking yard" 4.3L engine and still be under $3000 and still have your current drive and 470 "parts" to sell!

There's enough people out there that are stuck with their 470's that will probably buy up all the 470 specific stuff so you'll recover a fair amount of money in the swap.

It would be an easy decision for me....

Your mileage may vary....

Cheers,

Rick

Re: Visiting the machine shop tomorrow

The manual is confusing me a little. Exactly which side of a seal is considered the "lip," the side with the coil spring or without?

With that said, the manual says to install camshaft seals with lip toward the coolant. These seals appear to have what I'd call a "lip" on both sides.

Is it picture #1 or picture #2? Based on the orientation of the front crank seal, I'd say that the side with the coil spring faces the direction of the fluid trying to be held in, i.e., I chose #1.

E6TE-DA on mine.

Interesting, standard production pickup truck head.
E - 1980s
6 - sixth year of the decade (1986). This is only when it was designed, not a production date
T - truck
E - engine

Marine stuff usually falls under industrial, which would replace the T with a J. Z would be performance parts division.

I agree with HT32BSX115 thats the way to repair a boat unless you have alot of money.

I am taking as given that the old engine from the donor boat would probably have to be rebuilt too, so you'd be in that price range by the time it was completed.

I believe this is the correct orientation for the camshaft seals:

I have come to believe that is incorrect, but don't take my word for it:confused:. If you have a Merc dealer nearby, I will bet that the mechanic would be glad to help you out.

Thanks.

Hey, let me pick your brain some. Was it an aftermarket gasket that blew, or an OEM? I'll probably go ahead and get the OEM since everyone says to use that, but no one knows who makes the OEM gasket (Victor? Fel-Pro? Other?)

Did you buy that $70 dollar oil pump alignment tool or can/did you use the distributor shaft to align the pump?

Replace oil pump....may as well, although I'm reading the #8 manual right now on the oil pump-cleaning and inspecting.

I just got my oem head gasket........VICTOR stamped on it. I also have a complete Victor gasket set (that includes a head gasket) that came with my engine rebuild kit....Not the same head gasket. They are both made by the same company, but NOT made the same. I would guess the oem is made to Merc's specs. For the extra $45, I would just get the oem head gasket.

That's what I've been waiting to hear! I'll by the OEM.

BTW, I found a seal installation set at the local Harbor Freight for $9.99, but it only goes up to 3-3/8". For the large rear seal, I'm going to make a larger adapter out of a PVC cleanout I had laying around that is the perfect size and depth. I could spend hours inside that store.

I should get my stuff back for the shop tomorrow.

You would do yourself a big favor and get a lot more answers if you would start a new thread with a new question, not just keep changing subjects on a single thread that is over 100 replies long.
Since this is now about a different subject from the original post and you have a new thread started on the same thing, this one is closed.
