I have a 1990 oil injected 40hp merc and have been having trouble getting it started. I have checked the switchbox and all the other electrical ignition parts. I have also checked the fuel system up to the fuel filter. I left some gas in the system last year before storing the boat for the season and i think i need to clean the carbs. What is the best way to clean the carbs without tearing them down and rebuilding them?

I let my boat sit and used sea foam, and it did help, but I ended up taking off my carbs and cleaned them out...

The bowls were full of black guke, it pays to pull them if you have doubt..
Dirty carbs are not good for the engine...Seafoam might do the trick...

U should have a bolt on the bottom of the carbs that will release some of the trash...:)

Hope it works out for u...

Re: Carb Cleaning

i am looking at using Seafoam on my rig to clean it out .... i have some possibly really stupid questions .... thanks for help in advanced!

1. this is done with the muff (boat out of water)?

2. do i need to remove prop?

3. can i use too much? .... i have 1990 Merc 135 HP 6 cylinder 2 stroke

4. any other tips/tricks?
