We have aquired a boat with a 69-71 Mercury 650. We r boating idiots, we know nothing. Is there a need to change or check oil we can not find an oil port. This was kept in a shed and never used we just want to make sure we do what is needed for service before we use it, the last time it was out was 1977. Thanks for any help available.

You need to pick up a manual for the engine, it will describe the maintenance procedures you need to know. The lower unit oil should be changed, the water pump impeller should be changed. Check the wiring the insulation on the wiring may have crumbled with age. Thats a nice old classic, no reason why it can,,t run like new again.

Just so you know there is not going to be an oil port on the motor, it is a 2-stroke. You mix the oil in with the gas. The correct about though is going to be in the manual. It will be something like 50:1, 32:1 something like that. There is gear oil in the lower unit, the part with the prop comming out. This is where all the gears are. There is a fill and a drain. But again the type and amount of oil you need is in the manual. The impeller is in the water pump. If it is broken your engine will over heat, seeing it is a 10 dollar part it is always good to replace it and again info in the manual. If you are looking to work on this engine on your own it is a good thing to get. It gives step by step instructions. Good luck.
Oh if you are just wanting to see it run make sure you put muffs/flusher on the motor so it gets water. If you run it without water it can cause some major problems really quick.

Re: 69-71 mercury 650 HELP

I also have a 68 650 merc and a manual (Seloc). The manual gives the amount of oil but for the type. All I can find is high quality mercury quicksilver lower end oil. I have another manual on the way but it is not due to arrive till next week and I want to change the oil before I take this baby out for it's first run in almost 7 years.

So I went the local merc authorized shop and they say: that motor is to old we don't have any specs on it, go see old mike down at the water front on the docks. He's the only one around these parts that knows anything about those old motors.

I couldn't find mike so I'm still trying to figure out what to put in my lower end. And so far no one wants to stick their neck out.

So any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

David

Old Mike is probably out fishing with his old boat with his old merc on it. The quicksilver lower end oil is the correct oil for both your engines.

Go ahead and use any SAE 90 MARINE EXTREME PRESSURE GEAR OIL. A number of different brands out there to choose from.

There is an excellent post (I think in the FAQ section) on awakening an old outboard motor. Have a read thru that to give you a good starting point.
