I have the opertunityto trade my Jeep for a 1993 Four winns 190 Horizon that is in spectacular condition, it looks like it just came off the show room floor. It has the 5.0 and 175 hours on it. What are your opinions on this boat? I know nothing about it.

Re: What do you think of this boat

I owned the 1986 195 version of that boat for 20 years. I maintained it very well, including replacing two floorboards and rebuilding the doghouse. With trailer it was valued at around $4,000 when I traded it last year. It never gave me a bit of trouble.

Four Winns of that era held their value very well. They were solidly built (heavy!) and had lots of features for their size.

An inebriated friend named it for me the first time he saw it: "Four Winns -- No Losses!"

Gads, I loved that boat.

It would be an OMC from the factory for sure. Unless it has been repowered, it is an OMC.

It is the OMC and I do understand they are not making them anymore and parts are pricy, other than that is there any downfalls to the OMC?

four winns have a great reputation. I have the 5.0 omc, theres alot of shops in town that still work on them and can get parts for them. its gonna cost you to get the outdrive rebuilt if anything happens, but it will cost if its a mercruiser as well. I would say its a great deal, and others would say dont touch it because its an OMC.

Re: What do you think of this boat

OMC actually had a better design than Mercruiser. It is much easier to service things like the raw water pump on an OMC. They are just as durable, maybe a little more durable actually. Parts availability is very hit or miss. Some items are easy to get others are much harder.

If I were in the market for an I/O boat and I could get an OMC powered boat for around $1000 less than a Mercruiser powered one that was equal otherwise I would consider it.

I would consider an OMC if it was the 5.8 EFI. :D
Maybe next time......

could you ask if the owner has the paper history of what has been done to it over the years?
like how often it has been serviced and parts that were replaced, and by who?

OK I did the trade. My Jeeps blue book was around $3,900 but I did have a few upgrades but cannot really count those. Here are some pics of the boat. I took it out yesterday and had a blast and couldn't be more happy about it. I feel I will get alot more use out of the than I did the jeep(Although I already have another Jeep fund going). Let me know what you think?

I think you did good, that looks like a garage queen, that's just been waiting for some sun. Hope all goes well...and enjoy the rest of the summer! I'd take her to a shop for a proper winterization and get all the fluids changed just in case though.

Edit: well...late fall winterization that is, not now!

Re: What do you think of this boat

I do not know the complete history of this boat but from what I am told The guy I picked it up from bought it 4 months ago for $9,500 and had no place to store it he lived in an apartment. He says he took it out 4 times. From some of the reciepts and paperwork I found in the boat, the original owner maintained it very well. I went through it and could not find any downfalls, it fires right up and runs like a champ and best of all the floor is solid. Also last week he had the trailer worked on. It has 5 new tires, new bearing and brakes.

Be careful of pushing the other girl in your driveway to the side.... she's likely to get jealous. I can imagine the conversations they're having right now.

Speaking of "girls".... what's the girlfriend think of this one?

(Now that I say that... I hope you didn't get rid of her, as per the advice of so many on this forum... wouldn't I be the jerk, then?!)

Congrats- looks nice.

I actually took out the old ugly Glastron on Saturday up in the mountains and had a blast. I am actually going to be giving it to a family for a very small price tag (Both parents are school teachers so of course they don't have money) I took them out and they had a blast and I think it will be a great first boat. But yes I kept the girl friend even against most of the guys advice around here and of course she loves the boat.
