Rusty pulleys+slipping belts=plugged carb

My belts were slipping and after investigating I found the pulleys were rusty in the V and the rust was chewing away at the belts creating rubber dust that clogged the spark arrester and carburetor. The decorative cover on the engine hid the spark arrester and the rubber didn't show up on the black engine. Keep the belts tight and repaint any rusty pulleys before more damage is done or you're left stranded.

I hate to say it, But the same thing happened to me a week ago. It ate about 1/4 of my alternator belt. Was fun to clean !!! , Bob

I painted all of mine with brush-on XO-Rust when I replaced the engine. Seems to be holding up well. I tried standard engine paint on the port engine, and even with 2 coats, it didn't hold up well at all. I had to wire brush everything this spring. I'll repaint the pulleys on that in the fall I think.

what do you paint the pulleys with?

I used Mercury outdrive paint because it was sitting on my bench. I painted them several coats minutes apart and let them dry for two days. The paint is still on there and no slipping.
