1974 johnson 6 hp dose not open up

I have a 1974 johnson. It starts like a dream ,idles like a champ. The problem that i am having is that i have it on a very light 12 foot jon boat no weight but me in it. When going down the lake it only wants to open up about half throtle. Shure would love for some one to help mw with my problem. going to check the compretion tommarow.

Check Compression. Do a ignition check. See if it is running on one cylinder or two. Use a rag and when it's running pull one spark plug wire off and put it back and then the other. The speed should drop equally. If it dies right out the other cylinder is not firing and you're running on 1 cylinder. After both of these it might be a dirty carb issue.

checked comp 90 on both cleaned carb complete tear down. new plugs still dose not want to oped up when in gear will go wide open in netrual has 8 * 7 1/4 prop. and is fireing on both cyl drops the same now what. Thank for any help

So you removed one plug wire at a time when it was running and the rpm's dropped roughly evenly? Huh... did you remove and clean the high speed jet when you cleaned the carb? Did you remove the entire carb and put a new kit in it? Have you verified that the throttle plate in the carb opens full up when the throttle is moved to the fast position? Have you verified the link n sink in that the carb butterfly starts opening when the roller cam hits the timing mark? These are other things to look at.

btw, when I had my old 5.5 on my 12' aluminum, the boat would plough as I
m 240#'s sitting at the back... Are you in a similar situation? But my neighbour's kid got it planing at 22-23 kmh.
