ok heres the deal all any shop will tell me is the forward and reverse are not ran by the hydrolic system. yet it is.

ive checked all cables and they are perfect. the linkage is not out of adjustment. but when if you look at the trans shifter area it has 2 hydrolic lines going to it. and the shifter depending on the direction it goes is the way the flow will go to put it into the gear.

now every shop keeps telling me the gears are not ran by hydrolics yet if you see what i see i beg to differ.
im almost convinced that i the system in my boat is rare. considering everyone ive shown or told about my boat have never heard or seen anything like it.
1 its the biggest tri hull anybody has seen
2 there is nothing i or anybody else has been able to find about this boat.

i have a 1971 18.5 foot trisonic trihull by roy rodgers
it has a strait 6 merccruiser. its an open bow and seats 10.

if anybody can help me with this confusion i would so greatly appreciate it

if pictures are needed i can provide them

i'm guessing that what your seeing as hydrolics for shifting. is really likely the rev. lock valve. it's mounted right to the shift plate where 2 cables are present. one from the helm remote. and one going to the outdrive. there is also a big cyl. looking thing about the size a ear of corn. that's the trim sender tells ya what position your drive is in. up or down.. the rev. lock valve just looks like it's part of your shifting because it's on the same shift plate as the cables. also the cables actuate the rev. lock valve via a lever, but have nothing to do with the shifting of your drive.. one cable goes down to your drive and that's what does the shifting of it.
get yerself service manual #1 from mercruiser (or maybe the adults only thread). it'll have the facts in it..

side note. i got a trisonic 1700 caprice (16') in my back yard. it's a 72 with an 165hp L6 too...

Post some pictures. With a 38 year old boat, who knows what some previous owner has tried to put together.
If it's OEM, it's a Mercruiser 1 drive. Has hydraulic trim/tilt, and the reverse lock has lines to it as ziggy mentioned, but not hydraulic shifting.
Your shops are right, and if they all looked at it and said it's not hydraulic, then I would guess they are right and you are wrong.

ok i'll post some pics. that area is so damn confusing. one of the reasons im guessing it has to do with the hydrolic is i ended up with a leak and all the hydrolics ran out. thats when i lost reverse. i fixed the leak filled it back up and got reverse again but ended up with another leak. fixed that and no reverse now

the shift cable you see that runs through the transom plate controlls your shifting.
If you go to the "adults only" section follow the directions for downloading manual #1 (it's over a gigabyte big... so you need broadband) Follow the procedure for adjusting the shift cable. If it still doesn't shift right plan on replaceing the cable.

Nope, hyd. leaks have nothing to do with your shifting, it`s all mechanical

.
If it's OEM, it's a Mercruiser 1 drive. .

These are one of the pre-Alpha drives that are funtionally very similar to the Alpha, right? The hockey stick shift shaft in the lower unit and the clutch dog arrangement and all that?

You say "the shops not helping" & "the shops keep telling you the gears are not run by hydraulics". Have you given the boat to a qualified shop to fix? And they can't fix it? Or are you distracting a busy shop for free information so you can fix it yourself?

no the problem is no shop in my area will work on it much less even look at it cause if its age. so all i am able to do is ask questions.

anyway i found a guy that help me. it happend to be the cable in the outdrive. the very end broke on the part that the cable connects to for the shifting. that's why i was able to go into forward and not reverse.
the nice thing thou, is we pulled the out drive slid the inner part of the cable out of the cable sleave and slid the new one back in. which made it a hell of a lot easier then replacing the whole cable itself. so all in all it took about 3 hours total. took the longest putting the drive back in but we greased and lubbed everything while it was out so its a purring outdrive now.
