So we took the family to the river/springs this weekend only to run over a rock or something (the locals said there was a rock in this spot) and of course we had to be towed in. My question is this the boat still runs but it won't go in gear, the prop did suffer one minor bend in one of the blades and there isn't any other visible damage and I don't want to get ripped off so what should I expect and does anyone have any idea of the extent of the damage and or cost I might have endured??? Please help any suggestions will help and thanks in advance!!!

If yours is a IB/OB and you trimmed the outdrive up using the trailer switch instead of trimming it up using the control button you may have rised the the lower unit up to high.

I made that mistake to avoid rocks well my prop hitting the bottom in low tide I rised the out drive using my trailer feature and then I put it in gear. that when I bent my shifter cable. Thge boat would start but when I tried to put it in gear it would die. After changing the shifter cable the boat worked fine.

Any chance you bent the shaft? Can you turn the prop by hand? If so, does it turn straight ?

Hey JMan, I just went through something very similar 2 weeks ago with mine, and I hope yours doesn't end up being as expensive as mine was.

You can check out all of the helpful advice I got from these forums here:
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=2191020

Hopefully you don't have a stainless steel prop with a solid hub and a super short (maybe broken a long time ago) skeg, all of which contributed to my damage traveling up into the outdrive. If you have any questions after reading that thread, let me know.

It is a in/ob and that is exactly what mine was doing but then it wouldn't die when put it in gear it would just rev the motor up as if it were in neutral.

How fast were you going? Can't believe you didn't punch a hole in the I/O.

Sounds like you need a new shift cable which is around 130 bucks (depending on your I/O). You won't be able to tell if your shaft is bent until you put a good prop on it.

Maybe 25mph, it was right as we were approaching a no wake zone I'm guessing since I had the boat loaded down with food, tubes etc, in the rear storage area plus the fact that I let off pretty quick which threw the stern of the boat deeper in the water is probably the reason that I even found the rock in the first place and why we just drifted away right afterwords but damn this is frustrating. Yes it is my first boat it is a 97 Rinker 192 bowrider so I'm new at these type of problems. If it were my car or truck I would be okay but even though I've been in and around boats all my life I haven't ever had to work on one so thanks for all of your responses and help!

If you bent stuff in the lower drive it wont go into gear. You need to remove the drive and see if your cabe moves. Im assuming you cant even move it now. If it does you have internal problems in your drive.

Jman,
Since an insurance claim is not an option- Invest in a manual specifically for that engine and drive. There is obviously some damage if the prop shaft wobbles when it spins. I've found that for the most part if you're handy with tools- you can DO this. Between asking for advice online and picking peoples brains in the real world- I've managed to do all my own maintenance and repairs- and learned a lot by doing it! Key thing is to Take your time.
