Help me out - I am a rookine outboarder

I have a 9.5 hp evinrude outboard. When I put the housing back on when its running, the engine is basically chokes itself out - poor air flow/intake? when I pull it off again, it runs really well. I cannot see anything pinching or covering over the carburator. Any ideas? This engine ran well weeks ago with the housing on.

Thanks in advance.

It's not an airflow problem, it's an exhaust problem. If your problem is when it is in a barrel, you have no problem-- it won't do it on the lake. But if you're having this problem on the lake, then you will have to find out where the exhaust leak is coming from and pray it's not from the exhaust seal in the midsection. I've never done it before but I hear it's no walk in the park.
Good luck with it,

Exhaust leak from the the exhaust housing seal is not that common, but leaking at the exhaust hose from the exhaust relief is.

The most common exhaust leak on the 9.5 is from damaged or totally missing seal above the water pump: parts 309607 and 309583.

Also very common is that the shift rod boot (part # 309631) is torn.

When the exhaust housing seal does leak, it is often from debris lodged between the seal and the lower cover assembly; this can sometimes be removed without disassembly.

I've marked up iwombat's picture in the thumbnail.
