Is the lower unit interchangeable between a 73 120/140 and a 83 140?

If your unit is the 8 spline version ,No.The newer ones are 12 or 13.

No, the lower has to come down. Unless you`ve owned it since day one theres a chance the drive could have been changed or the newer gearset installed in a older case.

My main concern would be the actual housing or case. Would the internals swap in them?
