Not sure of year on my 20hp Seahorse

The model number is 20cr78c

Serial is c800299s

I figured it was a 78 but apparently they did not make a 20hp then. I have done a lot of googling but can't find anything to help me, any idea?

it says "Seahorse" ... sure you have the right cowling/motor cover?

also are you absolutely sure about the numbers? I got mine wrong just the other day, must have read them wrong. They're hard to read.

"Your Johnson model number can usually be found on the nameplate located on the motor or the mounting bracket. The nameplate should contain a model number and a serial number. The model number will identify the year and certain details of that motor. " from marineengines.com

possibly you're looking at the wrong part number?

there's threads on this site related to this too - I think there's a better site that breaks down exactly what the letters mean, etc. Do a search here on johnson model number or something.

CR could be "Canada Derated Rope Start"? But that's supposedly 1980 and newer.

So I still can't find anything that matches the Model number. The closest thing I could find is posted below,

Though this does not correspond to my engine. Even on earlier years, model numbers were written differently. 1978 seems to match everthing on the engine, but every place I call says there was no engine of this type made in 1978.

DEW this is a canada derated, rope start engine...it is actually a 25 hp motor...destroked...i know..i have one! NAPA will match the thermostat housing to a 25 johnson.. i knew when i got it ...it was awful big looking for a 20 hp.. the motor sat for many years, so i decided first thing...impeller and thermostat needed to be changed...so began a 3 week journey...into what year and what horse power is this thing? now we know!
