Hello,

My name is Eric and I am nearly at my wits end. I have cannot get the boat to start and cannot progress beyond the starter sounding like an electric drill and not engaging the flywheel. Its a 98 240 SE with the Volvo outdrive, carb'd 5.7GS and no modifications.

I have found so many helpful posts from searching here! I have printed several pages of notes to help test, learning more and more. I am mechanically inclined, but not so much on electrical. In fact, my multitester needs a "Hold this end" sticker :)

I began with the battery - made in 2008, fully charged and tested at 2 different auto stores, passed each test. I also made sure that the polarity was not reversed. The starter is brand new and tested at the auto store as well. Based on suggestions here, I re-installed the starter and used jumper cables to go direct from the battery. On the starter, I connected one + jumper cable end on the starter motor terminal itself (bypassing the solenoid). The other + jumper cable end went to the + on the battery. One - jumper cable end went to the ground on the engine, the other to the - battery terminal. My thinking was this would bypass the starter solenoid, ignition system and any possible bad wire connection. Result was the same with the starter spinning like a drill and not engaging the flywheel.

When the starter was being tested, I saw the gear spin and move up the shaft. It would spin up out to the furthest point on the shaft and then move back in 1/4 or so. I didnt think this was an issue since it was moving.

I have turned the engine with a socket and ratchet on the crank pulley, so its not locked.

I replaced the starter a couple of years ago since the starter gear was hitting teeth on the flywheel. The boat run for a complete season afterward.

There are shavings on the flywheel teeth, but no teeth were missing.

I'm confident that I have the correct starter for my application, but am wondering whats left to suspect..flywheel??

Sorry for the long first post, trying to cram every pertinent detail. I appreciate any and all ideas! I'm certainly out of ideas and need to get this thing running!

The starter should have a solenoid on it, this it what pulls the drive into the flywheel.bypass it ,and nothing will happen.
Ring gear bad?

My thinking was that I could bypass the solenoid by hitting the terminal under the battery terminal to see if the starter itself was bad. The starter did spin when I applied power this way..

starter and or solenoid. common issue with older chevy and ford motors in cars and trucks. having starters sit for periods of time is almost as bad as over using starter.

Thanks for the replies!

From what I gather, even though the starter is new and did ok outside the boat, I should look to get a replacement?

Ring gear isnt missing teeth, but if too much has been ground away, is it possible the teeth are too "short" and not engaging the starter drive gear?

There weren't any shims on the previous starter, so I didnt put any on the new starter as well.

the solenoid is where the uumph comes from to start a motor. it doesn't take hardly any power to activate the gear itself, but once it's bolted to a motor, it will draw a lot more power to turn motor over. so yes, it can seem like it's still good off the boat, cause there is no load being put on it. that's the downfall to testing it at the parts store. if your battery is fully charged, all wires are good and tight, and everything is how it should be, yet the starter turns really slow, or just goes clang, then it's a safe bet that it needs to be replaced. some starters will last years, others months.
