Hello All,

I recently acquired a new boat/motor/trailer combination with no paper work so that is fun in it's self. I am needing some help in identifying boat motor and trailer.

Boat;

The only info I can find on the boat is a small red and white stamped plate on the inside of the transom from OBC telling me about the boats rating for 725 lbs. and no more than 40 HP. There is also a number stamped into the plate,81271, and no other identifying information. LOA is 14' 9" Beam is 5' 8"

sorry about the quality of the photos my good digital camera is on the blink.

Motor;

The motor is a Johnson Super Sea Horse 40 HP the serial # 12738220 and model number is RDS29E. The motor turns over and has good compression. The engine has not been run in about 2 years according to the previous owner. My main concern is knowing what repair and owners manuals that I need to purchase?

Trailer;

There is no other information on the trailer other than the plate on the starboard side axle but it is worn completely smooth with no identifying marks. It is a roller trailer and it tilts.

Any information you have would be greatly appreciated

FWIW, there's a '65 Evinrude 40hp Lark Big twin service manual on ebay. Don't know if that's close enough to your motor or not?

For $9, the price is right though.

Yes indeed I started the process today to track down the regestered owner so to change over ownership to me before I spend one red cent on it! This should take all summer...lol I have nothing but time!

Thanks for the replys

Re: New to iboats<>new/old boat and motor

Ok so the paper work is nearly worked out. It was a fun day dragging the boat over to the State Police and back and forth to the DMV. Now that that is out of the way.

Giving the motor a once over, while waiting for the service/repair/owners/parts manuals to arrive, looks in better than fair condition!

I pulled the lower unit replaced the impeller re greased the splines checked the grommets for the vent tubes. All look in good condition. Re-install the lower unit. Changed the plugs new tank and fuel with 50:1 ratio for the fuel oil mixture. Primmed the tank to the motor..hooked up a battery filled a 35 gallon tank with water, hose still in tank and water over flowing. Started the boat about 3 seconds later it fired right up.

Motor was not shaking nor making strange sounds. But had a bit of smoke, more than a healthy 2 cycle engine should have, white smoke that is. The motor heated up and turned on the hot light on the dash so I shut her off. Let her cool down...Noticed oil in the test water.

Opened up the thermostat and go figure it was missing placed an order to replace the thermostat. Left the thermostat cover off and restarted the motor. saw water rushing up over and out of the thermostat cover. Stopped the motor.

So by my own novice deductions the water seemed to be drawing up and making it to the top of the block so the cooling channels seem to be open in the motor and the water is circulating. So I think it is maybe a blown head gasket?

Guys is there anything else I should be checking before I crack the head off this one and replace the head gasket

Im open to anything at this point

Thanks

James
