I am looking at buying a 94 Evinrude 112spl from from a friend who has lost interest in boating. The last time the boat was run was about 2yrs. ago and there were no problems. Had no luck starting so replaced the plugs and its getting spark when cranking. (dont no if its good enough but there is spark)
Pulled the carbs, cleaned and put kits in them, replaced primer bulb in fuel line, pulled fuel pump apart checked diaphram and reassembled, added fresh gas to the tank. Now i'm getting fuel at the plugs.

Question is where do I go from here? Is there any way to check coils? I put an ohm meter on them following procedure I found in another thread and they seem fine. How can I check the power pack or any other possible electric problem?

This would be a really good deal for me if I could just get it running. I dont want to start replacing components not knowing if they're bad are not. Any help on where to go from here would help.

you need to do a compression and spark test with an adjustable tester. $10.00 auto parts store.

Thanks for the quick response.
Forgot to mention I did comp. test
port side top- 110psi
bottom- 105
Starboard top- 110
bottom- 115
Is there any info I should know as far as spark or is it self-explanatory.
Thanks

Anybody have an opinion on this motor good or bad?
How many things can go bad sitting in the garage for 2yrs?
From what i've been told it has always run great and been dependable.

No big deal. this one may be beyond me, electronics and me dont play well together. Already did the fuel system, plugs, checked coils, just felt like it might be better and quicker to get an experts input and will go from there. Thanks again for responding at all. I'll post what I find out and maybe the next guy can get it done without involving the shop.

This is a great forum for alot of good info, Its really helpful
Thanks Brian

I think you missed the spark test, if you used a sparkplug to test spark thats no good as far astetsting spark goes, the gap tester needs to be used and set to 7/16th inch, thats the real test.
Anyway, sounds like you did all the expensive work already, its probably just something simple now.

Mech says its a bad power pack. My question is how could I have diagnosed this problem without sending it to the shop. Its gonna cost me, but at least he's using oem parts, just wish I could've saved some labor cost.

Re: Evinrude 112spl Won't Run

I'm a little late here but I was going to suggest the primer or the emergency cutoff, particularly if the starter is turning the engine with spark and gas. First time I tried to start my 115SPL it ground and ground but never fired. I knew I had good gas and spark to the cylinders and I could hear the primer solenoid functioning. Turns out the electric primer was not passing the gas into the chambers- my mechanic opened the cowling and moved the manual primer to the start position, pumped the fuel line bulb three or four times, cranked it, and it started immediately.

Better late than never! I'm considering buying this one from a friend not a real expert with these things. Fuel I can handle, Elect. just cant seem to get done without chasing my tail. Whats your opinion on the spl engines.

I like my 115. Nothing fancy...I premix, dual carbs, easy to work on and maintain. It gets my 18' CC out of the water pretty quickly- good power and good speed. I think those engines are solid. Keep us posted on how your's turns out and if the power pack solves the starting problem.

OK, The power pack fixed it, runs great right up to the point the buzzer goes off. I'm getting water flow everywhere with muffs and no buzzer while it idles. I put it in the water and I can idle around just fine, when I start to run it I can get about 1/4 mile and there goes the buzzer. I'm thinking its the thermostats but what do I know. The water gauge is reading about 14psi when its running. Man its late and I'm beat!!!

Re: Evinrude 112spl Won't Run

I had a similar problem with my 90hp Johnson. Turned out to be a plugged vent in the waterpump housing. I was a little too liberal with the sealant when installing the o-ring that seats at the top between the stainless cup and the housing. Cleaned it out and reinstalled - no more overheat.... Certainly won't hurt to check your t-stats, too...
