Re: 1986 Evinrude 15 hp stop switch wiring

It would have to be in parallel to work. Where is the existing kill switch on the 86? I put MOB switches on my 79 - 9.9, 82 - 15, and 73 - 9.5 but they all fit right in the same hole of the face plate that I pulled the kill switch from. The switch I used was made by sea dog and had two sets of contacts, norm. open and norm. closed. Worked like a charm without and additional work. The face plate on the 9.5 is a little recessed but the lanyard still fits in place. Best of luck and IMO a very good idea. Rick.

Rick:

Thanks for the reply. My kill switch is located on the gear lever side of the motor, mounted in a hole in the lower part of the mounting bracket.
I want to leave that switch there and add a switch on the steering console. This way, I can attach the lanyard.

Sorry for that. I just assumed it was a tiller. There is a difference between a man overboard switch and a kill switch. A kill switch you have to manually depress and the MOBS works with a lanyard. Either way I'm sure you will get it wired correctly. I didn't see a picture of the switch in the link you posted. Just make sure it is a normally open switch. Best of luck. Glad your being safety minded. Rick.

Thanks for letting me know the difference between MOB and kill. Is there a switch with lanyard that also lets you push the button to stop?

Ken

BTW: I have a 16 foot jon boat that I am adding decks, steering console, rod holders etc. I am converting the outboard to electric start, but I will probably have to start it from the motor, not the console, since I don't know how to remotely choke and squeeze the primer bulb. I will drive the boat from the steering console. That is why I want the kill switch on the motor, and a MOB switch on the console.

Sounds like a sweet ride. I don't think you'll find a switch like that but the lanyard just clips on and pulls off easy so it will work for both. Others, much wiser than I, might be aware of such a switch though. Last time I said there was "no such thing" (unrelated topic) catransplant had a picture of one on the screen in a matter of minutes. You gotta respect the wealth of knowledge on this board. Rick.

I have an 06 T8 Yamaha tiller control motor and it comes with the combination MOB/Kill switch that you are looking for. If you cannot find what you want in the after market, it might be an option for you.
