I have a 1987 evinrude 140 VRO motor. It has been upgaded to the new VRO system. I have noticed that it smokes excessivly now and uses about 1 gal of oil to 25 gals of gas. Any idea what might be causing all the smoke and excessive oil use would be appreciated.

your VRO was a variable rate mixer, the OMS is a 50:1 constant mixer. you probably need to do a decarb on your motor to cut down on the smoke. also synthetic oils create less smoke.

Re: New style Vro problem

Normally excessive oil use is caused by air bubbles in the fuel lines or a restriction in the system somewhere.

The factory service manual explains how to use a vacuum gauge and clear fuel line to check the health of the boat's and motor's fuel systems.

There is a possiblility that an internal part of the "VRO" is bad and you can usually hear or feel a rapid clicking which also rapidly pumps extra oil in the fuel. An oil flow test procedure from the service manual will show how to perform it.
