What would cause a loud ticking?

I was out fishing this weekend and after catching a fish, I had the motor in neutral idling. Without missing a beat, a loud ticking noise started, so I drove back in. The motor SEEMED to at least be at speed, but at 5.5 hp, it's all slow. I don't even want to rip in to this thing if it's gonna be super expensive but it is in really nice shape and I'd love to preserve it. Just wondering if anybody could tell me what it could be. I have an Older- i think mid fifties evinrude 5.5 hp fisherman. The ticking is constant and it does seem to speed up as I accelerate.

Your fuel tank will make a ticking sound. Release a little pressure on the tank.

No, the fuel tank made no difference. The sound is coming from the motor itself.

You mixing your 2 stroke oil properly? Could be a rod.

OR

It may have jumped timing, but it would run crappy. Most likely.

Pull the plugs and yank the starter rope, listen for the source,
is it upper or lower end?
Try in neutral and in gear.

Put it in gear, plugs out, put a dowel on the piston head and turn the prop ( or flywheel if in neutral) just follow the piston with the dowel...
when it goes ATDC PUSH down on the dowel, is there any play in the rod?

How is the gear oil?
