hi everyone first time posting on here so forgive me if this is in the wrong section.
just bought this outboard secondhand, gave it a bit of a service changed impeller and gear lube. when i start it it works fine with the hood off but as soon as i put the hood on, it splutters and dies. any help would be great.

The first thing I would check is to make sure that when putting the motor cover on it isn't disturbing any wiring and causing the problem.
I am a novice with outboards but I can?t imagine it sealing so tight that it would deprive the motor of air and choke it out, I would lean toward it being something disturbed when putting the cover on maybe a lose wire ect.

just been down to the harbour to check not catching any wires or anything. could it be some sort of air starvation. i only say that cos of the way it coughs and splutters to a stop.

thanks Jeff for your reply. what it was, was the grommet at the top of the gear shift was not in place so letting exhaust gases into the hood thus chocking the motor.
