Grease in through hub exhaust

When we got back to the ramp and were flushing the engine the exhaust was smoking I shut the engine down and noticed grease inside the prop exhaust area. We had water going to the motor and were flushing at 800-1000rpm. We had run the boat for 8 hours fishing with no problems at troll or WOT. We did not get an audio warning for overheating. Looking for any help in figuring this out.

Thanks Joe

Are you sure it was grease and not unburned oil?

I feel stupid because now I'm not sure. Felt like grease due to its feel but it was a greeenish/grey color (merc premium oil) which could be the oil mixed with the water. I did just recently topoff my oil tank and reset the oil level switch. Its a 2004 merc 150 2 stroke, what would cause that much un burned oil if that is what it is?
