I just took my old 9.8 out of mothballs where it was for almost 20 years. I checked it over, put it in a drum of water, and within 5 pulls it started right up and seemed to run and shift fine. Water was flowing out of the pee hole. My question is there any lubrication points I should be concerned about such as the lower unit etc. after all these years? if so, what kind of lube should i use. Any other problems i may encounter. thanks

Change the oil in the lower unit cost about 5 bucks. Remove the (2) screws and let the oil drain in a container that you can dispose of. Insert tube or tip of quart bottle in lower screw and squeze until oil comes out the top. Replace top screw first than lower screw. Make sure it does leak around screws. There should be some grease fittings on the tilt, handle and lid (latch) mechanism. Just a little on the grease or it will get messy .

You might want to check the rope if it is a pull start. Nothing worse that being on the water and having the rope break. Measure a peice of rope that will fit around the fly wheel a couple of times and keep it for emergency start if the rope ever breaks.

Thanks for the info. Is there a special oil that has to be used in the lower unit?

It's actually called lower unit gear lube. You can just about get it any where. Auto parts store, marine store, even K mart and Wal Mart carries it. It's an 80-90 weight oil. I usually buy 2 when I purchase it. When you fill the lower unit it should take a little over half of the quart or almost most of the tube (tube has less in it). This way I always have a little extra in case I need it. Depending on how much you use the motor will depend on how often that it needs changed. I use my motor 5 to 6 days a week from ice out until the lakes freeze again and change the oil often. It may be annal but an once of prevention is better than replacing a lower unit that freezes up due to oil that has lost its life.
