Powersteering goes all the way to right w/o assistance, tried to bleed system thru pump as per manual and lines to steering cylinder. Steering cable shows appropriate length as shown in manual. Steering seems to have stutter like movement sometimes. P/S hose clamp was loose and seeping, tightened, seemed okay, line ruptured, and loss fluid, replaced fluid and pump noise went away. At one time when line was leaking the steering was fine as if it bled the air out of system. Could it be a hydraulic fluid lock or steering cylinder. Your opinion please. Thanks, Bill

Bill,
I have the same problem on my 90 sea ray. did that completely fix your problem? Once I start my motor, the outdrive goes right with out assistance? I can't seem to get it figured out. If you would let me know if that fixed your problem. Thanks

My guess is the problem would be in the actuator valve in the system (located in the transom area where the steering cable goes through the valve body that the PS lines go to. Could be blocked or restricted one way, or maybe some grease in the zerk fitting will help. (yes there is one back there, but not easy to get to).

Re: 1987 Mercruiser Power Steering AL-1

I have tried the balancing route and also boutght a new actuator valve. still doesn't correct it. I have put a 98 7.4L in a 1990 searay that had a 7.4L to start off with. The only difference is fuel injected and serpentine belt on the 98. when we put it in it sliped right in. started it on the hose, make sure you have your hand off the steering wheel cause once pressure builds it takes off to the right (turning left). it has so much force that twice I have broke that aluminum tube on the steering cable. any other suggestions?? Thanks

on my new to me 1988 Starcraft I blew a return line on the power steering. I found the water to oil cooler had froze and restricted the return circuit.
Don't know if that info helps or not
