Re: Deadliest Catch TV Show

this is an awesome show. New episodes every tues. night. Im hooked on it, seen every episode so far. The one with Keith on the wizard and the tarp was interesting, definitely not like him. he hasnt done anything like that in the past before. I stll say that some of the guys, especially the time bandit, seem like they might have chemical influence to stay up that long but who knows. I have worked long 18 hour shifts before. they do get breaks also that they rarely show, like for meals, or an hour nap here and there. all in all, great show and i think Mike Rowe (narrator) really makes it what it is.

Re: Deadliest Catch TV Show

The one thing television writers are not known for, is an excessive amount of ingenuity - they tend to do the same sorts of shows and make use of the same sorts of techniques over and over again.

The thing about making it look like the boat has to be filled "yesterday," is case in point. Watch many of the other occupation related reality shows and you will see the same thing - this is just like the theme on every single OCC show .... gotta get the bike done in "6 minutes" and the supplier messed up ... yada, yada, yada.

Phony drama building techniques aside, this is an intersting show to watch. I like it from a general perspective and because the photography interests me. Given the very controlled environment in which most television and movies are created, this is definately "gonzo" film work! No 1st and 2nd ADs running around, no PAs kissing every butt in sight and craft service is, "you'll eat what we eat, when we eat!"

Standard TV fare in one sense and not at all standard in another. All in all, its pretty cool.

I'll tell you another one to watch is "Whale Wars" on Animal Planet. I'm all for saving wildlife, but these people take it to crazy extremes. To make it even better, all the crew are "volunteers". I don't think most of them have ever been to sea before.. Catch it Friday's at 9 or Sunday's at 10.

I want to know how they paint the ships while at sea and crab fishing for 70 hours straight, I swear on a recent episode the NW went from a rustbucket in one frame to freshly painted in 10 frames and at night!!! :D

Gotta love editing and 'splicing' footage.

Isn't the cap of the wizard the same guy who got his bell rung pretty good during king season when he dove under his ship to look for a jagged zinc?

If Whale Wars is a union shoot, which it most likely is, I doubt that there are any true "volunteers" involved. On a purely documentary set, I'm not sure what SAG would do with the subjects of the filming, but since these shows are not really documentaries and all of the participants are essentially actors, my guess is that they are getting union scale, at a minimum.

lol, yes that was the same guy that hit his head underwater. ive been out to sea for a few days at a time, and we would often paint the boat while under way. maybe they did it overnight at the processor or somethin, i dunno. they do seem to busy to be painting the hull n stuff in rough weather though.

Ya that Captain is a bit spazzy. Going under a bobbing ship LOL. I get away from my little boat when waves come in while we are swimming. He has a good personality though . Just hope he and the crew survive his future not so bright ideas

I think I would rather go into combat with the Taliban, unarmed, than do what those guys do. That isn't fishing (well, crabbing), it is defiance of the Devil.

Don't know what they make, but seems to me that $500K/year is not enough.

In his younger days, my youngest brother went Alaska crabbing for two seasons--one for king crab, and one for Opelio.

What other job, legal at least, where a 22 yr old kid could make $120k for a couple of months work? That said, he quit after one of his good buddies got knocked into the water in 30+ ft seas. They got him back and he survived, but that was sheer good luck.

He agreed with you, JB. It just wasn't worth it.

He did tell me that he watches the show, and safety has improved much since he was on a boat!!!

Re: Deadliest Catch TV Show

A buddy of mine is a "Crabber" he has said that catching the critters is the easy part.......not getting ripped off by the processing houses is the hardest part. After the crabbers have been out there for weeks, they are so distracted by being home they just want the money and a bunch of beer. He pays two shore guys good money to be watching them unload all the time. One on the dock and one watching the the weigh master like a hawk. Apparently, some of the tricks they pull is to short weigh the load net by either sliding it along the dock and recording the number, or recording the number a split second after the net dumps. He's caught them many times not even weighing individual loads. My buddy claims he's saved megabucks over the years. That is the shame of seasonal catches, everybody only one shot to make all the money they can........whatever way they can, I guess.:(

Highlights of the next show made it look like Sig was having a heart attack. Who knows which show it will be. Sometimes they show highlights that are for later shows
Ya the Bandit got ripped a new one by the processors. The crew just went to bed. The owner claims they got shorted 5 or $6000

Re: Deadliest Catch TV Show

I fished Alaska on a Purse Seine for salmon. Know a few crabbers. Always said whatever you pay for crap is not enough! Had a helper(Plumber) that worked on crab boats, had 2 go down on him. 1 had a fire just out of Dutch, They got into a skiff and got picked up.Second one they started taking on water through a rusted off pipe(broke before a valve,no way to plug) another boat came along side and they jumped to it. Both boats went to the bottom. He was not going for a third!! We used to see how many Chum salmon(at 50cent a pound)we could though in the bag for sockeye(at 2.15#)LOL.
