HI
Help,

I am having a problem with the 1998 JOHNSON 115 ELECM I picked up this winter. I have it running on my motor stand. I have the old style controls (pre-1996) hooked to this motor with adapter kit 176349.

2 problems related to the warning horn.
1, The warning horn does not sound when I turn the ignition switch to on.
2, The warning horn goes off every 3 ? 4 minutes, It is an on and off beep (book says VRO oil) but I mix my own. I can shut motor off and restart it immediately and again in 3-4 minutes it beeps. Every time without fail.

The VRO is was disconnected so I left it off and mixed my own 50-1 gas

The fuel line bulb stays full of gas.
It has a 4 wire fuel pump (tan, purple, gray, black)
The input oil line into the motor next to the gas line has a nipple cover on it

Diag things I have done.
I disconnected the temp sensor and ground it out and the warning horn beeps
The tach works fine
Volts at battery at idle is 13 to 13.5, rev it up and it goes to 14.5
New water pump, plugs & thermostats
Tested all ignition wires ? ok
New water pump.. pisses like a race horse and water gets warm
Both heads feel about the same temperature
I ran it without the thermostats and no change, every 3-4 minutes warning horn still went off.
I checked VRO input oil line and clamps feel tight
I tried a using a different tank and hose. No change.

If you need any more info.. please let me know..

Help.

Re: 1998 johnson 115 - warning horn problem

disconnect this harness, It has a 4 wire fuel pump (tan, purple, gray, black) it is causing your alarm.

previous owner missed one step.
VRO conversion w/ pump still working

if the fuel side on your Pump is still working it is very simple. unplug the 2 line harness going to the oil tank, unplug the 3 or 4 wire harness, going to the Vro pump. cut and cap the oil line going into the motor. add oil to fuel tank, mix well, then remove fuel line at top carb, catching gas in a container, pump the fuel line bulb until you get premixed gas to the carb. you can tell as it will change color. put line back on carb, and go boating.

Hi,,, Hello and thanks.. Just to confirm.. you are saying I should disconnect the 4 wire connector to the fuel pump. The fuel pump does not need any wires?
wow....

Do you think this is also why I do not get the warning horn beep when I turn on the ignition?

Re: 1998 johnson 115 - warning horn problem

Hi,, thanks for info on pump... that's a relief to hear it is not the pump and just take some wires off.

question for the "key on beep"

I just took apart controls. It has a 2 wire horn.

One wire comes from the key switch (purple) on that key switch lug a second purple wire goes the the connector that goes to the dash board tach.

Other wires comes directly from wire harness from motor (tan)

Key off. no power to horn on either wire
Key on. both wires read 12v

took wires off of horn. turn key on.
Purple wire has power and tan wire nothing.

I did an ohm meter between tan wire and ground and it doesn't show full grounding.. on meter it goes lowest to highest to the right.. so 100.. down to 5,4,3,2,1 full. I get about 2.5 resistance. not sure what this means..

does this horn not work right with the adapter I bought? if not do you know of a way to hook it or another horn up? or don't I need to hear that key on beep.

Many thanks.

Re: 1998 johnson 115 - warning horn problem

The horns with the built in test beep have three wires. Controls from the late 1980's had two wires and a slot above the ignition key that you could insert an extra key into to test. Before that the horn did not have a test in the remote.

If you have a three wire horn, you can wire it to the ignition ground for the test beep when you turn the key to run or start, otherwise, you would need to add a switch to test.

You can see the standard two wire horn wiring for the side mount at Bill Kelly's site. http://www.maxrules.com/graphics/omc_pics/REMCONTBOX.jpg

If you want to add the three wire horn with the power-on test, its part # 0585992.
