i'm looking at a 1980 thompson, they ad says 140hp volvo. my question is what is the platform here. chevy, ford, or volvo? i would also like to know what the compression should be on this engine. the guy says it fires right up.

The engine is probably the AQ140 Volvo OHC engine. The 140 is just a model number, not the HP, the HP rating is 125.
Typical compression on a new engine is 145 to 175.
