In Oregon, convicted felons are going to be charged 60 bucks a day to stay in jail. Charging immates for toilet paper has been shelved.

My question, if you do not or fail to pay do they throw you out of jail?

I like that idea, but it does have flaws. Well, since it is the government, once they get out of jail, they could have their paychecks garnished and tax returns taken away, kinda like delinquent child support payments. They started charging inmates I think $3 a day in Polk County, FL.

county jails been doing it for years in Wisconsin, think it is $20 a day in my county. It basically covers meals. And most of our county inmates are short timers and have huber privileges.

Re: Jail Birds

So a convicted burglar serving a 10 year sentence will owe $219,000 upon release. What kink of a job will he be able get to pay this back? He will have to file for bankruptcy or start stealing again.

Like Billy Mays says ?Never charge more than $19.99.?

It's kind of like a student loan. He can use all those valuable skills he learned in prison.

interest free, and he pays $10 a month for the next 5-10 years or he gets picked up. Again, its not the money, its the principal. having to see that "$2.50 Dummy Tax" coming off his weekly paycheck to remind him to act right.

he pays $10 a month for the next 1825 years.

Since employers don't have to hire them and renters don't have to rent to them,
how do they pay it back where do you think they will live?

thats why I had the comment about it only being for a 5-10 year time. and for it to only be $10 a month. if the guy cant come up with $10 a month he needs to be back in jail.

again, its the principal that they need to pay back their debt and they need a constant reminder and NOT that the whole amount be repaid.

i have to be careful or i will get zapped

have any of you spent time in jail?

how does this "innocent until proven guilty" thing work if you can be incarcerated against your will ??????????????????????????????????????

the nasty food and the nasty diseased clothes, blankets ,and bunks they give you are punishment enough for most ......................... i would agree if all the people where guilty............. but it just isnt so

ive been in jail for as long as a week and i wouldnt pay a damn thing for the crap i got to eat and sleep on.

it would seem fair to me that if you have to pay to be in jail everyone should have to spend at least a week in jail when they turn 18...................... that would be a better lesson to do right than having to pay to be treated like ****.

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!

it is especially hard to get a job when you have 4 felony assault charges and 2 are against cops ......................... believe me i know.

when you tell someone stuff like that they seem a little scared of you :(

i have to admit i have an anger issue.... when i get riled up.

but for the most part im laid back ................ its like the old saying "dont poke the bear"

besides arent these valuable lessons better learned by paying the outrageous fines they impose on you??????????????????
paying to be locked up against your will is UN-AMERICAN ............... we are supposed to be the land of the free.... not we'll take you to jail because we dont like the way you looked at us... and charge you for the poor service and exposing you to diseases america.
