Good evening all. Today I was able to score an old johnson motor for free! It is in rough shape. I am having trouble finding the exact hp and year. The Model # is rdl-16. I know the rd-16 is a 54 25hp. But I am not able to find anything model #rdl. does the L even matter? It is an electric start and has great compression. Also once I identify the exact model, where is a good place to find parts for it? Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: 25hp johnson?

I double checked the model number and it is definatly rdl-16. I am planning on trying to get this motor up and running good and then trade or sell it for a smaller 15-18hp johnson. this motor is an electric start, but should I be able to start it with the rope even if the starter motor isn't hooked up??

Also could someone tell me how to remove the flywheel? I have tried using a puller, but am not having any luck??

Thanks
shawn

You can start it with a rope. Make sure the kill switch is in the operating position if it has one.
What kind of puller are you using? It should be a harmonic balancer type of puller with (3) 1/4-20 bolts in the flywheel holes. You'll ruin the flywheel if you try to pull it by the edges.

Make sure the puller bolts are hardened so they don't strip out - #8. Make sure the puller bolt is lined up parallel to the shaft - you want to be pulling it straight up. Leave the flywheel nut loosely on the shaft so that when the flywheel comes loose it doesn't fly off. Tighten the center bolt on the puller and give it a rap with a hammer. Then tighten the bolt a little more - give it another rap. It may take some time and effort, but eventually it will pop.

Re: 25hp johnson?

Thanks for the advice. I have a harmonic balancer puller, but was afraid to hit the fly wheel with a hammer. I haven't notice a kill switch anywhere on the motor. the only wires coming off of it appear to be the power and ground wire for the starter, there is also a smaller single wire, that i am unsure of, I assumed it went to a switch or something. I will be ordering a manual for it soon, so that should help with a lot of the basis questions. I ideally want to get this motor up and running good enough to sell or trader for a smaller 15-18 hp as 25hp is probably a little too much for my small 14ft aluminum Larson. Thanks again for all the answers.
