What year is this motor

I just bought an 85 pontoon boat with a 40 johnson VRO on back the problem is the last owner never had to title/register the motor so I have no clue what year it it. HERE IS THE MODEL # J40ELC. Thanks for reading

I missed the last 2 letters on the model the whole thing is J40ELCDE so does that mean an '87 or '89? ? ? ?

I'm not sure how to go about posting my request but here goes. I got here by searching for info on an old Evinrude. The reply was from 06 but it was close to what I think mine is and the person knew what he was talking about. I think the model is 3038 and the serial is B 4822. It is a Lightwin and I don't know if it folds or not, it is hinged at the bracket where it affixes to the transom. I'm wondering what year it is and what it might be worth, also if it is feasible to consider using it on a small boat or possibly a kicker on a sail boat.
