I've been reading posts on here for awhile and have not seen any specific posts on this topic so if you can help it would be great
I recently bought a 12 foot jonboat with an included 7.5 Sea King outboard so i was working my way through start up i began by digging out an old mouse nest and checking general condition all seems fine.
next i moved on to spark pulled plug and lightly pulled cord motor turns over easily so i checked for spark by installing plug and pulling cord no spark so i figured points might be bad so i pulled flywheel and then thats when my whole method changed it doesn't have points thats when i noticed on the cover it says solid state ignition. the ignition seems very simple stop button, coil, plug wire, plug that is the entire system so i assume the coil is bad and needs replaced.
Now for the questions, I tried disconnecting the stop button still no spark, Am i correct in assuming the coil needs replaced?
What is correct plug? it has an autolite in it now.
Is 40:1 the proper mix ratio air cooled so use quality chainsaw oil?
What is the procedure for changing impellor,if i can find one?
Need info on carb and fuel pump cleaning?
Now for the important stuff-
1978 Sea King 7.5 (Clinton)
model# K7535106 C
serial# 1540890
type# XTV 52307 C (X might be a K tag is damaged a little)

On the 3.5 thats another Clinton several types of carbs have been used.
Start with settings about 1 1/2 turns out adjust final adjustment high speed first at speed.
As far as your other Clinton In my opinion you should not invest any real money in it.
It is a marginal performer vibrates, noisy, and finicky.
I would part it out on Craigs List or Ebay or sell it as a parts motor give compression specs etc.Put the money toward a 5,5.5,6 hp Evinrude/Johnson
from 52-the 70s. Routine parts readily available some right here at iboats.
smooth, relatively quiet, easy to work on run circles around your Clinton.

That might be the official story, I don't really know. But I do know that the Clinton engine that is on the outboard was originally designed as a chainsaw. And as a chainsaw, it ran on 16:1. I see nothing about putting it on an outboard that justifies running it leaner. In fact, it runs much hotter as an outboard. Just my 2c. BTW, I worked for a Clinton chainsaw dealer back then.

ok 16:1 better to be rich than lean anyway considering its not mine.i think i figured out the carb problem, i thought float was stuck fuel running out front of carb, its missing a part in the needle valve seat kind of looks like an o-ring of some sort between the point of needle and bottom of seat
