Just wondering a friend of mine said long term trolling is hard on an i/o and shouldn't be done for long periods of time. Is there any truth to this?

No, I dont think boat builders would manufacture something that shouldnt be run for long periods of time. Maybe if it was run by slaves with oars and you didnt feed them.

What is a long period of time?

There are places all over the country where boaters encounter no wake zones that can last for up to an hour. No real long term effects.

Ever been stuck in 2 - 3 hour traffic jams with your car that just idle along? That's your boat motor trolling.

I think he may have been thinking 2 stroke outboards that may or may not get gummed up with carbon because of the gas/oil mix.

I wouldn't mind hearing your friend's reason why it's hard on an I/O.

BECAUSE !!!

"My sister's brother-in-law's uncle's cousin's best friend's son, who washes boats at the local marina, said the engine wouldn't start because the tires on the boat trailer were inflated passed 35 PSI."

Information gained in the latrine should be left there.

...but the yellow paint probably helps, mascarading as a slow turning diesel.

How is it harder than any other speed?

Ayuh,... It's the constant Loading,+ Unloading of the driveline,.. It flexes,+ wears on the splines,...
Especially if not Greased..

Ayuh,... Only the "Old" Caterpillar Yellow will do....

Ayuh,.... I tried 45psi,... It didn't Help, at All...

i painted racing stripes on my prop... adds an extra 15 HP. (yellow and red)

the reason it works is cuz it makes the boat feel more youthful.
