Stripping painted on Registration numbers

I am in need of information on how to remove registration numbers that have obviously been painted on over the boat's finish. Needless to say, I bought the boat and had to register it in Kentucky, as I am stationed at Fort Knox. The numbers look hand brushed on, and should easily come off, but I want to make sure I do not ruin the gel coat finish. Thank you.

Test this in a small spot first, but what I've done in the past is use "easy off" oven cleaner to remove the name on the back of a boat. Simply spray on, let sit a minute and then wipe off. Wax the spot after and all done. This worked great for me, but I tested a small spot first and it doesn't seem to do anything to the gelcoat. Obviously I don't think this is going to work if you have an aluminum boat that has paint underneath the numbers.

Go to an auto parts store and get some brake cleaner. It'll take off lots of different kinds of paint wihout hurting the fiberglass. Obviously, test it on a small spot first. It'll also take all the wax off, so you'll need to re-wax it.

Easy-Off worked great for me too....I was told to only use the fume free kind that doesnt need heat to work....a little less harsh....not sure if it matters or not.

If the numbers are on the original Gel Coat, you can use paint remover with no ill effects if the oven cleaner does not work. Just do a couple #'s at a time. Gel Coat is much more resistant to chemicals than people think!

Just to be carefull, do a small bit first!
