Hello to all,
Looking for a lower gear housing for a 78 25hp chrysler 2 piece lower unit, the one I have is broken around the retaining ring so all the guts dump out. I would like to shorten the shaft and convert this motor to a tiller...any ideas where to look for parts or kits to do this? Thanks...any info would be appreciated!

Welcome to Iboats. Your best bet for the lower unit is to watch ebay or craigs list. These units and parts are becoming scarce. You could try the chrysler crew for a kit to convert from console to tiller but again that kit was offered for a short time and due to demand there arent a lot of them. Going from a long shaft to a short shaft is going to depend on which lower unit you end up getting. The water tube and the drive shaft are the difference. To convert from long shaft to short shaft you will need to remove the extenion piece between the motor leg and lower unit. Remove the shift coupler extension and then replace the water tube and drive shaft with a short shaft version.

Thanks for the response...It seems they got all the lower units for other sizes and models except the one I have...Is there a cross reference to what parts from other size motors will fit to mine?

Is it the gearcase that uses a 9 inch prop or does it use a 10 3/8 diameter prop.

They made a couple of different versions of the 2 piece lower unit. The 10 inch prop has a different gear ratio and performs much better. However, the two are not interchangeable.
