Outdrive 1.84 replaced with a 2.00

Hi all ,,,A co-worker of my replaced his merc. outdrive that was geared at 1.84 with a newer one gearsd at 2.00 the motor is the 470 and he loves it ..i though the change would blow the motor ...does the change really make that big of a differance from 1.84 to 2.00 ..... bksah2

Ayuh,... It's probably about 4" to 6" of Prop difference...

2.00-1.84 = .16

.16/1.84 = .087 = 8.7%

He changed his final drive ratio by less than 10%.

He essentially made a change equivalent to dropping his prop pitch by one size (lets the engine rev up quicker, it will accelerate and pull better). For example, if the prop on it is a 19" pitch, it will now run the same as if he had a 17" pitch prop (10% lower than 19") on the ORIGINAL drive.

WoW guys,,, i know very little about prop sizing and what it does to boat proformance...but when i see some of the replys i am glad that there are some smart guys out there...I would love to here more about whether this is a good move or a bad move so i can pick on him or praise him

hi cheapboatkev...the guy i work with, who did this has aways been kinda of a knowitalll and i am trying to beat him at his own game... any info you have on his swap good or bad would be great ....Thanks

Well it seems he could have simply change his prop to the 17 inch and gotten the same result as swapping his lower..Kinda 51/50...

But a prop change woulda been a 10 minute job versus ???? & $$$

BTW...I am no expert, just re reading the data from 45auto, and I do trust his #'s.
