I have been doing maintenance on my in-laws evinrude 5.5 for some time now. Every year I have to pull the carb off and clean it out. I am looking for a newer carb that would work on the old rude and need to know if anyone has swapped out carbs.

If the outboard runs OK once you clean the carb, the problem is not the carb. Check your fuel hose from the tank, and the hoses inside the cowling, and the condition of the inside of the tank. If the hoses are old or the tank has crud in it, fix those things and you'll probably take care of the problem.

Re: 64 5.5 carb

It has been a number of issues that with a little work on the carb I can get it going again. The problem is that the motor is in an area that does not have parts. With the common 9.9 carb out there I was wondering if I could pick one up to have on hand just to swap carbs after clearing the system. Once cleared at the start of the season the motor holds up pretty good. I just want an extra carb on the shelf to swap instead of clean and re- gasket.

Thanks for the reply.

i suggest you start adding seafoam to your fuel, and that you fog it for winter.

agreed. it's not the carb but old fuel left in them over the winter. I have some sailing friends and rebuilding their carbs is a habit as they tend to fill their tank at the beginning of the year and run 6 months on it. I tell them they are better off with fresh gas at least once a month, but they don't listen.
