1963 40hp Gale"lower oil plug won't go back in

I was draining the oil on the lower unit,now the plug won't go back in,there is something metal that is stopping it ,what do I need to do to get the plug back in? Model#GG18805A

Is this one of the 2 large flat head screws?Or is it the smaller phillips head screw?Does something appear to be blocking it?

Yep, you are the 3,547,213th person to do that. Took the phillips screw out didn't you? They made it a phillips screw so people wouldn't be taking it out. It is a pivot pin for the shifter fork inside. You will have to fiddle with it till you get the holes aligned. It may help to turn it upside down so gravity helps.

The drain plug is just like the upper vent plug and is on the bottom on the nose cone, towards the front.

If you think you goofed up, consider this: The new pivot screws have a large straight screwdriver slot. Nice temptation.

Thanks,I figured it out,yeah I was told I was one of the million that have done that.
