I am working on a Mercruiser 228 with a serial number of 6021325.
Someone has removed the thermostat and the kit that was given to me by the last owner is a Sierra 18-3668. I have been looking for a picture or description on how it goes back together. The kit consists of thermostat, gasket with no center hole, thermostat gasket, o-ring, and thin cork gasket. Could someone tell how to assemble it?
I am sure that I am going to have other questions during the resurrection, should I keep posting on this thread or do you prefer to have thread for each question?
Adding link for the kit description.

Go to the adults only section at the top of the page. You will find a link for free downloads of Merc. manuels. There should be everything you need to know (and see) there.

I have done that but couldn't find anything that looks like it. Maybe it is the wrong thermostat kit.

I will look for the third time. The other times were late at night and must have missed it with one eye closed.:)

I am sorry but I can't find what I need.
I downloaded the manual and even printed the page with the cooling system.
I can't find anything that shows the gasket without the hole.
I even have both eyes open.:)

Re: Mercruiser 228

I am getting ready to put the engine back in the boat and thinking whether it is easier to install with or without the exhaust manifolds on. Pro and cons either way?
The reason the engine was taken out was for the timbers being broken at the motor mounts. The last owner had them repaired. The holes are not there for the mounts. If I set the engine in place and put the bolts in the rear mounts, will that align it enough to get the location for the holes for the motor mounts? Should or use alignment tool and adjust everything and then locate and drill the holes?

The bolts on the transom plate mounts should locate the engine and front mounts fore and aft, but they could still be off left to right a 1/4 inch or so.

It is a good idea to use the alignment bar and align the motor, then mark and drill your front mounting holes.

Just be sure to double check your alignment after everything is bolted down tight.

Re: Mercruiser 228

What size lag screws are generally used to bolt the engines mounts down?

Also, will the impeller on the water pump in the outdrive take shape to the proper direction?

3/8" or 1/2" depending on the mounts....

Also, will the impeller on the water pump in the outdrive take shape to the proper direction?

Nope,... It's gotta be installed the Right way,... because there Is a Wrong way....

After reading bondos signature made me think.

Do you lube the impeller with anything when installing it?

Re: Mercruiser 228

Now I am totally confused. I am working on wiring a new bilge pump and there is a red wire in the loom that was just cut off. It is powered all the time. What could it be for? In the same loom are the 2 wires for the bilge pump and the power wire for fuel tank gauge.

constant hot is for the float switch on the bilge pump. There will also be a switched wire and a ground. If using a combo pump with the float built in, there are 3 wires. If not, you'll need to wire up the external float to the constant +.

I am using the combo pump. Can I hook the hot red one for automatic or just cap off the red one and hook it up automatic off the switch. My switch is currently only 2 position. On and off.

Re: Mercruiser 228

Couple outdrive questions.

I need to fill the outdrive with lube. Do you fill the top drive and the oil goes down to the lower drive?

I don't have any of the mounting hardware for the outdrive.
Are the nuts anything special? They look like 7/16 fine thread studs.
What is used to mount the lift cylinders to lower outdrive?
Are there rubber mounts that go in the cylinders?

They are a fine thread nut, but they need to be stainless steel and self locking (Nylon insert in nut).

Ayuh,... Or more commonly Chrome plated Brass....

I need a little help wiring the trim pump. Where can I find a schematic?
I have three wires that are disconnected. The positive and negative main feeds and a smaller red wire.
It has the 2 solenoid system.

Re: Mercruiser 228

Would a wiring diagram be in a Seloc manual?
I can't find it in the mercruiser manual downloaded from Adult sticky.

Re: Mercruiser 228

bilge pump wiring is boat wiring, not engine related

probably not gonna find any wiring diagrams in those manuals for bilge pumps

if it is a new pump, there should be a wiring diagram in the instructions, otherwise, google is your friend
